A fantastic day of Rugby and remembrance
The Royal Anglian Veterans Rugby group descended to one of our recruiting counties to play the 36th Regimental Rugby against Huel Tring RFC.
Beer, BBQ and a well-ordered set of tents, trailers, caravans and bashas marked the advance party’s location, as they awoke on match day for some early morning touch rugby with the hosts, this followed with a hearty breakfast.
The roll of honour and the bugle calls were very well-received by all. The home team, which contains several veterans in their ranks , found it very poignant. The large, loud, and mainly Royal Anglian crowd cheered for their team against a strong opponent. Skippered by Viking front row, Karl Smith, a finely balanced game saw the hosts win with a close score of 31-29. The Man of the Match was awarded to Anthony Crowe. He was everywhere and played a fine fixture playing alongside his two sons, this gave the home team much to ponder!
After the match, the President, General Tony Pollard presented caps to the following stalwarts: Bill Shand, George Waterfield, Kiran Fraser Neve, Paul Tomson, Dave Bevan and Tony Crowe. The Dewick Outstanding Contribution Shield to was presented to Ian ‘Robbo’ Robinson. A cheque of £1000 was then presented to the Deputy Colonel of the Regiment, Major General Olly Brown, as a contribution to the Benevolence Fund. The rest of the evening was spent demonstrating the supernatural singing and drinking skills of the ‘those Supermen’.
The next fixture is at Ampthill. This will take place on Saturday 6th September 2025.
We look forward to seeing you there, we encourage you to follow the buildup on Royal Anglian Connect, Facebook and Instagram and our other social media communications.
