Personnel from the 3rd Battalion, Royal Anglian Regiment, supported by instructors from 3 Royal Anglian, 3 PWRR and 158 RLC, recently deployed to Halton Training Camp to deliver and participate in a multi-activity Adventurous Training package in the Lake District.
The programme consisted of rock climbing, mountain biking and summer mountaineering, providing both instructor development and student training opportunities.

Week One – Instructor Development
The first week focused on developing instructor capability. Instructors consolidated skills and techniques gained from previous courses while learning new methods from more experienced and qualified instructors.
Throughout the week, participants enhanced their instructional competence across all activity areas and were provided with opportunities to gain additional qualifications.
This included achieving the MIAS Mountain Bike Mechanics qualification and the ALeRT Leader/Instructor qualification, further increasing the unit’s capacity to deliver safe and effective Adventurous Training.

Week Two – Student Training Package
The second week was dedicated to student development through a three-day round-robin training programme. Students were introduced to fundamental mountain biking skills, enabling them to successfully complete a Red route at Whinlatter Forest. They also received instruction in summer mountaineering, covering route selection, navigation and teamwork, culminating in a successful ascent of Helvellyn.
The rock climbing element was conducted at Twistleton Scar, where students were taught the fundamentals of climbing safety and equipment management. Training included the inspection and correct fitting of climbing equipment, tying into a harness, and belaying techniques.
Following this instruction, students progressed to bottom-rope climbing on a variety of routes, allowing them to apply the skills they had learned in a practical environment.

On the final day, students were given the opportunity to select the activity they had most enjoyed during the week and undertake further continuation training. This provided additional time to develop confidence, improve competence and gain further experience in their chosen discipline.
Overall, the package successfully enhanced both instructor and student capability, while promoting personal development, teamwork, resilience and confidence through challenging and rewarding Adventurous Training activities.
