Veterans from the Royal Anglian Riders take on the 1000 mile Iron Butt Challenge
Royal Anglian veterans Stuart Addison, Adam Freund and Dave Horsely, set off on their motorbikes to complete the 1000 mile Iron Butt Challenge for charity.
This event started on the afternoon of Friday 6th June for Adam Freund and myself. Checking into our hotel followed by a short ride to Squires Cafe to check in for the ride and a brief from the organisers, followed by fueling up for the morning. Up early doors for the short ride to the start point at Squires where we were met by Dave Horsely, and we set off at 0530hrs on the first leg, a 155 mile ride to Bangor, North Wales.
It was pretty bleak looking as we set off and during a short stop at Birch services for Dave to fill up, Adam and myself donned our Gary Goretex. Just in time so it seems, as the heavens opened shortly after and remained open all the way to Bangor.. We arrive at 0750, 20 minutes early allowing plenty of time to fill up, have a quick snack.

We left Bangor at 0820hrs, for the 147 mile ride to Haverfordwest. It rained most of the way with only a short respite as we rode through the valleys up towards Aberystwyth. We arrived at Haverfordwest at 1145hrs, filled up, quick snack and toilet break.
We left Haverfordwest at 1230hrs for our first long leg of 219 miles to Barnstable in North Devon, with a short stop at Magor for Dave to fill his tiny tank again. Not a bad ride with only short bursts of rain, but a mind numbing amount of time on the M4 and M5. Arriving at Barnstable at 1620hrs, for the usual tank filling, snack munching , liquid intake and toilet again, (It’s an age thing).
Departing Barnstable at 1650hrs for the nice short 131 mile ride to Andover. This leg started off relatively dry with occasional bursts of rain but the heavens really opened as we arrived in Andover at 1905hrs. Fill up, food and yep, you guessed it, toilet break.
Departing at 1930hrs for another long 219 mile mind numbing wet ride to Lowestoft with a long stop at Birchanger Services to fill up, get a brew and put our warm kit on.. The rain remained heavy all the way to Lowestoft arriving at 2354hrs. We filled our tanks and had a snack whilst we contemplated the last leg of the ride during our shortest stop.
It was cold and wet when we left Andover but it was freezing and wet now, every joint in our bodies had been in pain since Barnstable, to the point where using your rear brake peddle and changing gear was excruciatingly painful..
We left Lowestoft at 0001hrs, for 191 mile final leg. Again, it rained heavily for the entire leg, it was wet and cold, the Gary Gortex had given up the ghost hours ago and let all the rain in and morale was low, especially as this leg had me riding about half a mile past my house.

We cracked on though in true Royal Anglian style, arriving back at Squires at 0323, where we were checked in, odometer readings recorded proof of reaching checkpoints verified. Followed by a ride back to our digs, a modest handshake and a about four hours sleep before meeting up for a big well deserved breakfast and the ride home.
All in all, we still enjoyed the ride despite the weather and the pain, I reckon we could have done about three quarters of it on Jet skis.
Our thanks go to the RBLR for organising the challenge. Thank you to Adam and Dave for riding with me, (I did the last two as a solo rider). Sorry that the weather gods weren’t kind to us, believe me it’s a great ride when the sun shines.
1078 miles ridden in 21hrs 52mins
Thanks also to all who sponsored us, so far we have raised £1815.00 for the Royal Anglian Regiment Charity, which will go towards a Regimental bench and Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum.
