Obituary for Peter White
Peter died in June 2016, aged 90. 14847038 Pte Peter White was called up in 1944 and enlisted into 8 Suffolk at Bury St Edmunds, training at Westlines Camp. He recalls being paid £1 a week. Posted to Richmond, he suffered lung injuries due to the damp and was invalided out in 1945.
Peter later became a Structural and Civil Engineer, running his own company, specialising in prisons. They were instrumental in the design of Highpoint and Norwich Prisons, converting Britannia Barracks, built in 1886, home of The Royal Norfolk Regiment, adding a new hospital and remand centre in 1972. Peter was also a ‘name’ at Lloyds.
Latterly, though largely confined to a red electric ‘buggy’, he was a regular attender and participating Rotarian of The Rotary Club of Beccles.
Peter’s beret bore many badges but lacked one of ‘The Suffolk Regiment’. The outgoing President of The Rotary Club of Beccles in Jul 2011 had one vital task to accomplish – ie obtain and present Peter with a Suffolk Regt cap badge. Peter’s face was indeed a joy to behold. He was pre-deceased by his wife Marjorie.
