Obituary for Lieutenant Colonel HW Clark
Wake Clark was born in Guernsey in 1922, but educated in England at Wellingborough, the source of many Northamptonshire Regiment officers. He was commissioned into the 1st KGVO Gurkha Rifles in 1942. He was Mentioned in Despatches in 1945. He served with both 4/1 and 2/1 Gurkha Rifles.
In 1947 he transferred to the Northamptonshire Regiment but did not join them until 1950 in Trieste where he was Adjutant to Lt Col Derrick Houchin. Previous to this he was Staff Capt A in HQ Central Malaya Sub District.
After a tour as a Staff Captain MS in the then War Office, he attended the Army Staff College at Camberley. He was then seconded to the Malay Regiment as GSO 2 Ops. In 1958 he joined 1 R Lincolns in Germany as a Company Commander and moved with them to Watchet in Somerset to amalgamate with 1 Northamptons to form 2 E Anglian in 1960.
Following a tour as DAAQMG 7 Armd Bde he returned to 2 E Anglian as Second-in-Command before commanding the Regimental Depot in Bury St Edmunds in 1964.
He was Head of C-in-C Secretariat MELF 1967 and then AAQMG NEARELF 1968/9. He then returned to the UK as GSO1 HQ Eastern District and finally AQMG Quartering until his retirement in 1977.
He completed his life’s circuit by returning to Guernsey where he was employed as Director of Guernsey Chamber of Commerce. He died there on 12 June 2009.
