On Friday 6 March, twenty-five members of the Regimental Family attended Veterans Day at Leicester Racecourse. The group included a mix of veterans and a minibus of serving soldiers from Kendrew Barracks. Despite fairly bleak weather, the racecourse provided a series of incentives for the day, including reduced-price entry to the Nelson Suite restaurant.
This ensured the group had a comfortable environment in which to enjoy food and drinks between races. Leicester Racecourse also recognised the Regiment’s charitable work by including a two-page feature in the race programme. Members of the Regimental Family were interviewed about their experiences with the Regiment and the support provided by the charity.

During the afternoon, the group visited the parade ring ahead of the Royal Anglian Handicap Chase, which was sponsored by the Regiment. Members of the party were invited to judge the best turned-out horse and present a cash prize to the winning horse’s groom.

Following the race, two members of the group, Benny Hill and Ryan McConkey, presented the winner’s trophy to the trainer of the winning horse, Fay Ce Que Voudras. To cap what had already been an excellent day, those who had contributed to the group betting whip finished in profit after backing the winner of the final race.
All agreed that the event had been a highly enjoyable way to connect serving soldiers and veterans of the Regiment, and many are already looking forward to attending again next year.
