Background: Derek had a fantastic and dry sense of humor. He was passionate about fishing and everything connected with it, and even tied his own trout flies. He loved the outdoors and was very knowledgeable about nature, which he enjoyed sharing with his family.
Army career: Derek was the son of a Major in the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment. After leaving Lutterworth Grammar School he enlisted in to The Royal Leicestershire Regiment in 1954.
He served with the Royal Leicestershires and then the Royal Anglian Regiment in Sudan, Borneo, Germany, Northern Ireland, Cyprus and the United Kingdom. By the time he had attained the rank of Warrant Officer, he was posted as RQMS (Quartermaster) to the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and later became Regimental Sergeant Major of the 2nd Battalion of that Regiment.
He was commissioned in 1976 as a Quartermaster and served with both the 3rd and 7th Battalions of the Royal Anglian Regiment.
Date of death: 22/11/1988
Circumstances: Derek died of cancer while serving with the Regiment in the UK.
Resting place: Countesthorpe Cemetery
