Obituary for Walter Robert Yeomans
Walter died in hospital on 17 June 2016, aged 99 years. Born to Walter Yeomans and Alice, he had many siblings, living in Waldeck Road, Norwich. After his parents separated he went to live with his father and aunt in Onley Street in Norwich, attending school in Colman Road. At the age of 15 he became a doorman at the Hippodrome cinema in St Giles, Norwich. Walter took the coats from people and received a good tip – more in a week than his wages. On his way home he would call in to his local fish and chip shop for a 2 and a 1, which was tuppence for fish and a penny for chips.
The manager at the Hippodrome was moving to the Odeon cinema in Norwich and offered him a job there as first doorman which he accepted. From the steps of the Odeon he saw his future wife Blanche.
Walter and Blanche married at Norwich Register Office in 1940. David was born in 1941, Michael in 1947 and Margaret in 1951.
He was called up, reported to Britannia Barracks and from there was sent with 2 Royal Norfolk to Burma, serving in the company commanded by Capt Jack Randle.
They finally settled at Drayton Road and he worked for Anglian concrete works at Lenwade as a supervisor. They tested concrete beams for bridges. At one time he was very seriously hurt when one of the cables broke. He was lucky to survive this. Walter took early retirement in 1972. After losing his wife Blanche in 2009 after 69 years of marriage he continued to live at Drayton Road with the help of his companion, Kay.
She made a big difference to his life and for this his family would like to thank her. He moved to Somerley care home and but after three years it closed. He spent his final weeks at Bowthorpe Care Village.
