New Commander 7th Infantry Brigade and Headquarters East

Brigadier Guy Foden was born in Leicestershire in 1976.  He was educated at Loughborough Grammar School and Newcastle University, where he read History and Politics. He has an MA from King’s College London.

He commissioned into the Royal Anglian Regiment in 1999. His early regimental duty was with the Second Battalion (the Poachers). He deployed on operational tours in Northern Ireland (Operation BANNER), Afghanistan (Operation HERRICK) and Iraq (Operation TELIC). He ended his time with the Battalion as the Operations Officer of the Basra City South Battlegroup on Operation TELIC 8.

After regimental duty he was SO3 G3 Ops in HQ 3 (UK) Division before promoting to Major and attending the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land).  His initial SO2 appointment was as SO2 ISTAR in HQ 12th Mechanized Brigade.

Selected to Command C (Essex) Company, in the First Battalion (the Vikings), he led them on Op HERRICK 16 in the Kopak region of Helmand.  After company command he moved to the Operations Directorate in the MOD where he was initially the counter-terrorism desk officer for Pakistan before taking on the responsibility for current and contingent operations in the Gulf and wider Middle East. This included such diverse operations as the hunt for the missing Malaysian Airliner MH370, Humanitarian and Disaster Relief operations in the Philippines, Non-combatant Evacuation Operations from Africa and operations in the Balkans and Ukraine.

Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 2014, he attended the Advanced Command and Staff Course 18 followed by a brief spell instructing. He assumed command of the First Battalion, the Royal Anglian Regiment in October 2015. The Battalion conducted a significant amount of Defence Engagement activity around the globe with a focus on West Africa, held readiness for UK and overseas operations and trained for Battlegroup operations.

Following Command, he served as the Military Assistant to the Commander of the Field Army. He assumed the role of DACOS Commitments in Dec 18 where he was responsible for the Force Generation of all Army overseas activity and UK Operations which included the Army’s support to the response to the Covid pandemic. He attended the Higher Command and Staff Course (HCSC) in 2020. In 2021 he was appointed as the Assistant Head Organisation (AH Org) in Army Headquarters where he led the team that completed the Future Soldier restructuring of the Army. He assumed Command of 7 Brigade (The Desert Rats) in January 22.
